Midjiwan opens the first coworking space for game studios in Stockholm

Midjiwan, the independent studio renowned for The Battle of Polytopia, has unveiled Game Town, Stockholm’s inaugural coworking space tailored specifically for game developers.

Game Town, besides serving as Midjiwan’s new headquarters, will also house Toppluva AB, creators of Grand Mountain Adventure; Warm Kitten AB, developers of Justin Wack and the Big Time Hack; Gro Play AB, known for educational game development; and Dataspelsbranschen, Sweden’s video game trade association. Additional game development firms are anticipated to join in the coming months.

Sweden’s game industry, encompassing foreign subsidiaries, amassed SEK 86.5 billion ($7.9 billion) in 2022, as per a Dataspelsbranschen report. Gaming stands as a robust growth industry, contributing over %4 to Sweden’s overall service exports. Game Town aims to foster creativity, innovation, and social interaction, solidifying Stockholm’s status as a pivotal game industry center with planned indie and AAA developer meetups, gatherings, and game exhibitions.

Södermalm, the Stockholm island housing Game Town, boasts one of the highest concentrations of game developers. Surrounding regions form a nexus for game development companies, hosting entities like Paradox, DICE, Fatshark, and Epic Games.

Christian Lövstedt, General Manager at Midjiwan, emphasized Game Town’s role in providing a professional yet engaging environment for smaller game studios to collaborate and innovate alongside fellow developers. Lövstedt envisions Game Town as a community hub uniting individuals passionate about gaming and game development, fostering an inclusive space for the entire industry.

Per Strömbäck, Chairman of Dataspelsbranschen, highlighted the concentration of game developers in Södermalm, suggesting it might be one of the world’s most densely populated areas for game development. Strömbäck noted the significance of Game Town’s location at the heart of this vibrant hub, aligning with the ethos of the local gaming community.
